The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) launched the 5th edition of the European Code Against Cancer (ECAC5) at the ESMO Congress 2025, marking an important step forward in Europe’s approach to cancer prevention.
Developed under Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, ECAC5 outlines 14 evidence-based recommendations to help individuals and policymakers reduce cancer risk through healthier lifestyles, vaccination, screening, and environmental protection. For the first time, the Code includes both individual and policy-level recommendations to support implementation across different countries.
Key updates in ECAC5 include:
- The inclusion of lung cancer screening as an officially recommended programme, alongside breast, colorectal and cervical screening.
- The expansion of HPV vaccination to both girls and boys.
- A new focus on limiting ultra-processed foods and managing overweight and obesity.
- A stronger message to avoid alcoholic drinks entirely.
- Recommendations to limit use of hormone replacement therapy, avoid all tobacco and vaping products, and reduce exposure to air pollution and indoor emissions.
These updates highlight the growing understanding of how lifestyle, environment and policy together shape cancer risk. ECAC5 provides a clear and practical reference for citizens, health professionals and governments to take action in prevention and early detection.
From Recommendations to Policy: The 4P-CAN Initiative
Through the 4P-CAN project, All.Can International and its partners are committed to turning the ECAC5 recommendations into concrete national policy measures. All.Can will lead the development of evidence-based guidance for the adoption and implementation of ECAC5 in Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, North Macedonia and Montenegro.
By aligning national strategies on prevention and screening with ECAC5, 4P-CAN will support countries in strengthening cancer control efforts, addressing inequalities in access to prevention and early detection, and building healthier communities across Central and Eastern Europe.
The launch of ECAC5 at ESMO is a milestone for cancer prevention in Europe. Through initiatives such as 4P-CAN, All.Can will help ensure these recommendations translate into real-world action and improved outcomes for people at risk.
