Efficient Communication in Cancer Care: A Conversation with Ivaylo Petrov
As part of All.Can’s ongoing efforts to unite international stakeholders and generate evidence for prioritising cancer care efficiency, we are proud to launch a new video featuring Ivaylo Petrov, from the Bulgarian Joint Cancer Network PA & Project Lead, social-entrepreneur and caregiver.
Through a series of interviews, All.Can aims to capture the perspectives of cancer patients and clinicians, transforming their insights into impactful digital advocacy materials. This initiative seeks to make the concept of cancer care efficiency more accessible and actionable, ensuring that it is not just an abstract term but a tangible goal for healthcare systems worldwide.
Ivaylo shares his personal experience, detailing the challenges he faced during a prolonged and stressful eight-month diagnostic journey and beyond. He reflects on the strain that misinformation and a lack of proper communication placed not only on the patient but also on the family, especially when trying to explain the situation to their children, friends, and colleagues. His story illustrates the emotional and social toll that ineffective communication can have, which is often compounded by delays in treatment and an overwhelming amount of uncertainty.
The video emphasises the need for healthcare systems to foster an environment where both patients and caregivers are active participants in the communication process. Ivaylo also stresses the importance of ensuring that caregivers receive the same level of information as patients, as they often become the main source of support during the treatment process. This two-way communication must be clear, empathetic, and actionable, giving caregivers the tools they need to assist their loved ones effectively.
Ivaylo’s insights are aligned with the findings in All.Can Action Guide for Efficient Cancer Care, which advocates for optimising the use of available resources to improve health outcomes. One of the key recommendations of the Action Guide is the need for better communication practices, which can significantly enhance patient care and reduce inefficiencies across healthcare systems. Ensuring that information flows in a timely, accurate, and empathetic manner is essential for fostering trust and empowering both patients and caregivers.
This video serves as both an informative resource and a call to action for policymakers, healthcare providers, and advocates. By improving communication within the cancer care journey, we can help ensure that all patients and their families receive the care and support they need to navigate the challenges ahead.
